The topic I have chosen for my artwork is Mermaids. I decided to chose mermaids because I’ve always had an interest in mermaids and when I was little my sister and I would always play mermaids at the beach and the pool. In my artwork instead of doing two separate mermaids I decided to do two pieces linking mermaids together. What inspired me to chose mermaids was memorys I have of my sister and I. Also I knew I wanted to use acrylic paint as my medium and I thought mermaids would stand out in acrylic paint on a canvas. In my artwork I did two pieces with one as a mermaid hair and one of her tail in the water. I decided to do red hair because I thought it would stand out more than a basic color against the background. I also chose the color red for her hair because it reminds me of the Little Mermaid, which is one of my favorite childhood movies. In my second piece I did a black tail which isn't as common because I picture mermaids to be bright and colorful. However I decided to do something different and have a black tail because it’s not as common and something that’s unique and different in my artwork.
My artwork has an acrylic medium because I love to use acrylic paint and I pictured it looking very nice with my topic. I also chose acrylic paint because it’s something I grew up using when I use to paint in my garage with my sister. Since my topic is related to memories why not use a medium that I have memories using so i decided to use acrylic paint.
When using acrylic medium I learned some new skills of making colors and also blending with paint. In the tail of my mermaid had a hard time creating an ombre effect because I couldn't get the blending right in her tail. I ended up using a finger painting technique and blended the colors from dark to light in her tail with my finger. Mixing colors to find the right colors was also kind of hard because I didn’t keep the same paint color I used for some things so I ended up creating the color multiple times until it was the same color I used before.
In my artwork some elements I used were line, color, value, space, and texture. I applied color and space in both the hair and tail paintings. I used color in the background to make it stand out in both and also used color in the hair painting to create highlight and shading effects. I also used space in both to make it balanced and even so the background would create an effect with the painting. In the hair painting I also used some more elements such as texture and value, I used texture in the hair to create a wave effect in her hair and used a values of red paints for highlights and to also create texture with the value colors. In the tail painting I also used value and line, I used value with the ombre effect on the tail with different gray colors and I used line to create a pattern on her tail that would stand out against the black color of her tail.
Some principle designs I used in my artwork are balance and movement. I used balance in both with the background and to make the two pieces come together as one. The balanced used in both helps the background stand out with the space left over from the paintings. Also the color of the background used in both pieces helps the two come together as one. Movement is used the the hair pieces with the flow of her hair throughout different pieces which also helped create texture.
